Sternberg Special Collections Photo

Sternberg Special Collections Photo

Photo of the W.H. Sternberg Mansion in Wichita, KS. Photo appeared in Carter's Monthly Magazine (which did a large 30-page expose on Wichita in the last 1890s.) Since the time of this photo the two-story carriage house in the back was converted to a single family house, but is still standing today and looks much the same (11/30/2009). W.H. Sternberg designed and built this residence at the height of Wichita's greatest economic boom and it was both a personal residence and a showcase home for Wichita's well-to-do. The Mansion includes five woodburning fireplaces, stained glass windows, a walnut staircase, parquet flooring, approximtely 90 -some windows and 6,000 sq. ft, of finished space not including a full basement at 2040 sq. ft. The corbelled chimney flues are highly ornate and all chimneys are completely original and the tallest stands almost 50 ft. off the ground (not including chimney pots). The apex of the house stands at 45 ft. off the ground. It was built in 1886. The residence is lavishly ornamented on the exterior and is frequently admired for the use of multiple porches on each of it's three main elevations. Present owner is open to assistance from interested parties that may provide assistance with converting the residence into a historic house museum (04/08/09).

Sternberg both designed and built several homes for himself and family members (as well as many others) and this was certainly the largest and most ornate of the personal residences he built for himself or family. Sternberg was quite involved in the design of residences he built and was well known in New York and Kansas as being a "trend-setter" when it came to innovative and stylish designs. In southern New York State, for example, he's credited with having introduced the mansard-style roof after attending the Paris Word's Fair in 1855. Certain design elements frequently re-appear throughout Sternberg homes helping to make their identification somewhat easier. Other Sternberg buildings are known to exist in New York and Missouri. It's suspected that there may be Sternberg homes / buildings in Illinois, Indiana and/or Connecticut and possibly other states. Sternberg is known to have bid and worked on projects throughout the state of New York and the central plains region.

In Wichita's early days, Waco Avenue was the "Elite Street" and grand mansions (such as Sternberg Mansion, Ross Mansion & the Smyth Mansion) dotted Wichita's most exclusive avenue. A Wichita Evening Eagle newspaper article on August 3, 1933 comments,

“in the early ‘70s (1870s)…Waco avenue was ‘the elite’ street. Waco avenue in the very early day was considered to be the best residential street and many believed that when the city grew large it would be the choice residence district of the city.”

Sternberg Mansion is the last surviving mansion of all these grand Waco Avenue residences from Wichita's economic boom years of the 1870s-1880s. An Eagle-Beacon newspaper article from November 16, 1976 states,

“The house, built in 1886 by William H. Sternberg, one of Wichita’s foremost builders during the city’s early boom days, is the only remaining Queen Anne style mansion of this size in the city. It is seen as a magnificent example of Victorian architecture, with most of the original detailing and gingerbread on the exterior, a large walnut staircase, wood paneling, and five fireplaces.”

Another Wichita Eagle-Beacon newspaper article April 10, 1977 stated about the mansion,

“The Sternberg Mansion…is unusual in that its eclectic style incorporates all the elements Sternberg could fabricate…Sternberg used his own home as a sort of ‘model home,’ a tangible example of his expertise for prospective customers… it is the only remaining Queen Anne-style mansion of its size in the city and it is a magnificent example of architecture…The use of exterior wood in patterns is most unusual as are the variations of the use of colored and plain glass. The leaded and stained glass windows on the landing of the very ornate staircase are most unusual in that they are of a geometric pattern not common until the 1920s.” (these windows were stolen from the Mansion in the 1970s, but were recovered by police - unharmed - and subsequently re-installed in the Mansion).

Sternberg Mansion has appeared in books, magazines, post cards and about three dozen newspaper articles beginning in September, 1886 in the Wichita Beacon which noted:

“Mr. Sternberg is building for his own use a fine residence on the corner of 10th and Waco Streets. Judging by the foundation it will be one of the largest and finest in the city.”

An article from November 2, 1969 in the Eagle-Beacon newspaper noted the quality of the Sternberg Mansion,

“It was built to last with joists of 2 by 8-inch timbers, and wood-work of pine so hard it will not take a regular nail and one interior wall that is 15 inches thick.”

In 1888, Chapman Brothers published the "Portrait
