Designing Storage Area Networks: A Practical Reference for Implementing Fibre Channel and IP SANs (2nd Edition)

Designing Storage Area Networks: A Practical Reference for Implementing Fibre Channel and IP SANs (2nd Edition)

This is a fully updated revision of Designing Storage Area Networks. It collapses or removes dated material from the original edition and adds new content, particularly in the area of Fibre Channel fabrics, IP SANs and storage virtualization. Storage area networks are now recognized as the preferred solution for fulfilling a wide range of critical data storage needs for institutions and enterprises. The success of SANs in establishing real end-user value is affirmed by the adoption of the technology by all major solution providers as their flagship server and storage offerings. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Dell and others now provide certified SAN configurations for performance, high availability and backup of storage data, while storage vendors such as EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, XIOtech and others offer SAN interfaces on their premier products. While the current market penetration of SAN-based solutions is only 20% of the total storage market, SANs are expected to capture the majority of the market within a few years.

Little Puffer Steam Train, San Francisco Zoo

Little Puffer Steam Train, San Francisco Zoo

Little Puffer

For hundreds of thousands of people who rode the Fleishhacker Playfield Limited, affectionately known as "Little Puffer", the return in 1998 of this historic miniature steam train was a cause for joy.

When you see the Little Puffer today, you'd never guess that this fully functional, pristine miniature steam train is pushing 100 years of age, a throwback to a time when a movie cost a quarter and bottle of Coke was only five cents. It is one of only three remaining 22-inch gauge engines left in the world. Little Puffer is an integral part of the San Francisco Zoo’s history and an important part of the Zoo today.
The History of Little Puffer

Around the turn of the century, the Cagney Brothers' Miniature Railroad Company, based in New York City, manufactured a few 22-inch gauge "Class E" miniature steam locomotives. One of these won the Grand Prize for Freight and Passenger Locomotives at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. It is believed that only six or seven of these remarkable trains were built. Though some were sold for mining operations, mills and amusement rides, the Zoo train may indeed have actually operated at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition 98 years ago.

Don Micheletti of the Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM) analyzed old photos of the train taken at Santa Cruz in 1908 and 1910 and found that this particular train was most likely built around 1904. He based this on evidence that an unusual bent coupler, seen in one photo, is the same as the train has now. "There was no definitive proof that this is the exact train, but close examination of old photos strongly suggests that this was the same train," said Micheletti.

Records indicate that the train was in service along a sandy beach in Santa Cruz from 1907 to 1915. After this, it is believed that the train was almost destroyed in a warehouse fire.

In the 1920's, Joseph Cornelius Hayes, a Ford car dealer, purportedly purchased the train. It had been sold for scrap by the operation in Santa Cruz when Hayes and a partner discovered the train in a scrap yard near Third and Brannan Streets in San Francisco. The story has it that they purchased the train as scrap metal in exchange for three cases of gin and an old Oldsmobile. "This could be lore as well," said Micheletti. "There are a lot of theories, but really nothing concrete."

Around that time the train was probably restored and was to be relocated to San Francisco's Ocean Beach. However, Fire Commissioners would not issue a permit because the locomotive was a coal burner and consequently a fire hazard. A more promising site was an amusement park in San Mateo called Pacific City. But Pacific City closed due to financial woes soon after it opened in 1924. Rather than have the train impounded, it was removed and hidden for two years in an old abandoned livery stable in Burlingame.

Herbert Fleishhacker purchased the train in 1925 and installed it at the new Herbert Fleishhacker Zoo, where it remained for 53 years. In 1935, newspapers touted the Fleishhacker Playfield Limited as the only train in San Francisco to make daily runs with full passenger loads every trip. The operating costs consisted of the coal burned by the locomotive and the salary of one man who served as engineer, conductor, fireman, oiler and shop man.

Although much of Little Puffer’s early history at the Zoo is unavailable, it is known that the little steam train carried about 100,000 visitors a year during its heyday, running a capacity of 42 passengers in three cars around a third-of-a-mile track for about three minutes.

Little Puffer was renamed “The California Zephyr” in 1965 when the Western Pacific Railroad sponsored a restoration of the train and its tracks. According to a newspaper article in 1971, plans were made to retire the train and replace it with a larger train on a bigger, longer track, powered by a Ford tractor engine. The new train and tracks were to cost $300,000, but plans fell through. Although it had then been scheduled to retire in 1971, it wasn't until 1978 that the train was finally packed away to make room for Gorilla World, an exhibit that opened in 1980.
Back in Service

The little train had languished in storage for 20 years when Zoo staff dusted off the tired and dilapidated steamer. It had been stored in The Pachyderm House with two Asian elephants, a grey seal and a pygmy hippo. Time had not been kind to Little Puffer. She was in a sad state of disrepair, with parts missing and splintered and chipped wood in the passenger cars.

In 1997, with the generous support of the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, California Federal Bank and the GGRM, the Zoo had what it needed to bring Little Puffer back to life. San Francisco’s GGRM, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of historic railroad equipment, went to work to restore the historic steam train.

Characteristics of Dog/Cat owners.....

Characteristics of Dog/Cat owners.....

... At the risk of alienating happy dog owning TVs....

1. Independence: Dogs have none. They must be leashed and accompanied by their owners whenever they leave the house. I think this is a control issue with male dog owners, a sure sign of immaturity. Cats are free to come and go as they please, trusted by their owners to exhibit proper behaviour and return home without the need of constant supervision. It takes a well-adjusted adult to allow this unrestricted freedom.

2. Self Sufficiency: When a dog, on a supervised walk, decides it's time to relieve itself, the owner is bound by law to scoop up the results. Now, I don't know about you, but this doesn't strike me as a sign of machismo. Of course, dog owners have options; they can let the canine do its business in the garden. Then, Mr. Macho will not have to pick up a pile of processed food immediately. Flies anyone? Ever step in a pile of cat stuff? That's because they bury it in out-of-the-way places. Nice and neat. Bad weather? Cats will use a litter tray. Dogs, well you figure it out.

3. Manners: Have you ever fed a dog? They have no control. They will eat everything you put in front of them. Give them too much food and they will gobble it up, get sick, then come back for more. Once again, you must control the mutt for its own good. The mess left behind by a hungry pooch..... Cats: Neat, clean, controlled. They'll be back for more when they are hungry. You must be very stable to own a cat.

4. Cleanliness: How often do you wash your cat? How often does your cat stink? Cats wash themselves. What a great idea! What's the matter macho man; got a little doggie soap in your eye?

5. Destructive Behaviour: Visit the garden of someone with a large dog. It looks like a war zone - holes everywhere, flowers destroyed, dead grass, mangled toys, and soiled patio furniture. When was the last time you were kept awake all night by a meowing cat? Behavioural problems are a given for dog owners. They do offer help for this problem. It's called dog obedience class. Guess what? There is no such thing as cat obedience class. I wonder why . . .

And if you hadn't already guessed... I am a cat owner...

dexter, the pesky house cat

dexter, the pesky house cat

I am not a cat person, or an animal person for that matter. So i ask myself now, why for the love of all things peaceful, do I find myself in a house which have had 7 (SEVEN!!!) cats at one time. Blame it on the super caring flatmates to turn this lovely-when-it's-clean abode into a halfway house for stray kittens!

Our newest addition to the zoo is this pesky little thing. Apprently, we have managed to make it to the most esteemed cat-lady repute in the village (think: old hags with hair rollers and a shower cap on). This little vagrant was left at our doorstep by who knows who complete with box and some rags to keep him warm . Majen called him Dexter after the TV character who is like the Robin Hood of the serial killing scene. Dexter the cat could never live up to Dexter the killer of serial killers, though. The cat is a hundred times more sloppy and without finesse than the TV character. He tumbles around all by his lonesome, bites all electrical cords he can find, falls on his behind while climbing the stairs, poops everywhere and the cat s.t.i.n.k.s. no matter how often you wash him. urgh, i tell you, the cat's disgusting. and it doesn't help at all that his favorite time to bite your toes and legs is when you're slaving away at your computer willing your creative juices to flow like a squeezed turmeric plant.

No, I don't like cats at all. And we have lots already. So please, if you're in Manila and would like to adopt this little thing, send me a message. We'd still like him to be in good hands 'coz okay, I admit, he's also cute and endearing in his own weird kind of way... =P

tower of cookies

tower of cookies

Yesterday I'd planned to start the day with some light housecleaning around the kitchen. By 11 a.m. the fridge had been moved two feet to the left and I was on my knees, attacking the floor with hot water, borax, vinegar, grease-cutting dishsoap, a weak bleach solution and fists of fury. By 5 p.m., the fridge was back in place, the floor was clean, everything was shiny and clean, and I was foul-tempered, sore and reeking of bleach. As I sat in a blackcurrant-scented bath, I decided that I was having cookies with my tea this week.

The top bin contains French Honey Wafers from Maida Heatter's Brand New Book of Great Cookies. The middle bin contains Cornmeal Shortbread Fingers, also from Maida's Brand New Book Et Cetera Et Cetera. The bottom bin contains good old-fashioned peanut butter cookies, made from the recipe in the 1943 edition of The Joy of Cooking. These are not so much tea cookies as cookies-&-milk cookies, but Lloyd loves them and requested them specially. Since Lloyd makes special requests maybe once every other year, I just couldn't say no.

do you have any idea how hard it is to get a 52 weeks of dog shot without olive in it? these two go everywhere and do everything together.

well, more like olive just follows daisy everywhere. she wants to do everything daisy does, sniff what daisy sniffs and be where daisy is.

totally reminds me of when i was young and i would follow my big sister everywhere.

when we first brought olive home, a little 9 week old pup, daisy wanted nothing to do with her. a bad sign, because i wanted her to teach olive. she could do it better than us, because she's a dog. we could teach her the rules and the boundaries, but daisy could teach her to be a balanced, social dog.

but now, they are perfect together. exactly the same, but so different. daisy is mellowing out, and olive is just coming into adulthood. but they LOVE each other, so much.

delco cookies

delco cookies

This is a favorite cookie/pastry of mine, I have not had them in about 15 years, they were a staple in the kosher bakeries of my youth living in southern california, they usually had raspberry or apricot filling and are most definitely not rugelah, the dough is different and the whole mouth feel is not the same...i have tried a few rugelah recipes and though the ingredients seem the same, the chilling and rolling are not and make for a whole different item.....though these are not as good as I remember, I think they are good enough to share! a few hints, they are not meant to be sweet, they do not bake well on silpat lined sheets, they like to cool a long time before removal from tray, they should not be eaten for at least 12 hours after baking, though they taste good, they do not set completely to be what i remember the bakery ones feeling like and for handling alone let them rest!

all at room temperature!
8 oz unsalted butter ( in the US that is two sticks)
8 oz cream cheese, block kind not from the tub
2 cups all purpose flour

8-10 ounces cold preserves or jelly
(I used apricot, but any you like would be good)

1 egg, beaten
approx 3/4 cup granulated sugar
about 1/4 cup powdered sugar

cut the butter and cream cheese into even sized chunks and run in the food processor until evenly blended, then open top and add 1 cup flour, incorporate and then reopen and add the other cup flour, do not overmix, but when it forms up like it wants to be a ball

then on a well floured surface with well floured hands and pin, take a third of the dough (yes this dough may seem loose or light to you but believe me it holds up) and form into a ball and knead just a little until it will roll out, mine rolled about 1/4 inch thick into a circle about 14 inches in diameter, does not need to be a perfect thickness or circle....i then took the straight edge of a hard scraper and cut this ovalish circle into about 10-14 sections about 2x3 inches is the best size but I made some huge ones too, just to play around and see how they baked, they are best when the final product is 2-3 bites, and they do shrink in the oven, I cut the dough into these sections then when they were all cut i put them all on a sheet tray that was buttered (with the butter wrappers from the butter in the dough) even on non-stick trays they like to stick and the pans can be a pain to clean!

I put 1 teaspoon preserves in the middle of the dough portion and picked up and pinched two sides together around the apricot preserves (on some I put too much and it really needs to be just a little since it melts and spreads in the oven) After the whole tray was filled and pinched, I beat an egg and with a pastry brush egg washed the tops, dough and preserves alike to get the sugar to stick, I generously sprinkled granulated sugar over each one and put in a 375 degree F oven for 15 minutes, remove from oven and let cool on the tray for 20 minutes, then remove from cookie sheet and place on cooling rack...I sprinkled them generously with powdered sugar while holding a pie plate under the cooling rack to catch and reuse the powdered sugar.....I had some warm, good but not great, but the next morning....AFTER they were completely cooled WOW the flavor was much better...so plan on lots of cooling time especially if you want to put then in a tin or on a plate as a gift, they hold up better in movement when more than 12 hours old and still taste better and better a few days old! I store them in a tin with the lid askew so they do not soften up again, I have tried them in the fridge as well and that works well in airtight containers, just not more than 3 days in the fridge cause they never last that long! Hope the hints help, I am new to all this and wish I had better skills! Hope you or your gift recipient enjoys!

101607 - Food Processor White Bread

101607 - Food Processor White Bread

It may look like crap but I'm amazed it came out at all. A couple of weeks ago my boss brought in his old Robot Coupe food processor, insisting it could be used to make bread dough. I found a cheap used copy of a food processor bread cookbook on Amazon and ordered it. The book came on Friday and yesterday my boss brought in flour, yeast and some other stuff. Today I attempted to make bread. I've only used a bread machine before and would have no clue how to actually knead dough. I chose the simplest white bread recipe for my first attempt.

I also had to proof the yeast, something I don't need to do when using a bread machine.

I get the yeast going, add the flour to the processor bowl, start adding water. Wonder why I'm having to add so much water. Realize it's because I never added the yeast mixture. Of course when I add that, the dough starts looking more like batter. Add some more flour, no good. Finally give up, pull the glop out and dump it in a bowl so I can clean up. After cleaning everything I decide to try one more salvage attempt, and got the sticky mess back in the bowl. I used the book's technique for pulling the dough over the center spindle and sprinkling it with flour. Finally, it started to look like dough and didn't immediately stick to my hands when I touched it.

It rose, I punched it down, shaped it and put it in the pan for the second rise. Then I went out for a walk, having eaten lunch during the first rise. Got back late and the dough had risen a little too much and I still had to preheat the oven. My boss suggested punching it down and letting it rise again but I was too tired of it by then.

Got the oven going, put it in. I'm guessing the top rose too high and collapsed during baking, which is why it's flat and sunken it.

I sliced it after it had cooled a bit, and tasted it. It was good! My boss cut a piece and said it was really good. Then he cut another piece, and my other boss cut off a huge slice.

It may not look like much, but it was tasty and was my first attempt at non-bread machine bread. I have shaped dough & baked it in the oven before, but only after the bread machine did all of the hard work.

I ate too much of it, 3 slices, but they were sliced thin.

Cuisinart MM-2M Mini Mate Chopper / Grinder

Cuisinart Mini Mate Chopper/Grinder

The Mini-Mate makes quick work of small kitchen prep jobs that might otherwise require difficult and messy chopping, grinding, and grating: nuts, nutmeg, and cinnamon sticks, peppercorns and seeds, garlic and anchovies, even chocolate and citrus peel. With a patented reversible blade for sharp or blunt processing, and two speeds of operation, it is well equipped to handle a variety of jobs.
Though it has a high-speed motor and durable stainless-steel motor shaft, keep in mind that the Mini-Mate is designed for small amounts of food: 2 tablespoons is the maximum recommended for one batch, and food pieces should be no larger than 1/2 inch. Purchase it to complement, not replace, a larger, full-function food processor. An instruction book that accompanies the processor details how to process many common foods and troubleshoot problems so you know how to best use and care for your Mini Mate.
Cleanup and completion of small jobs is quicker and more efficient because of the small size, though the many parts of the Mini Mate require disassembly, careful cleaning, and reassembly, which does add to total cleaning time. If you don't have the time or the patience for smaller detail-oriented prep jobs, Mini Mate is a great kitchen aid. --Emily Wolf
