American Black Vulture

American Black Vulture

You hardly ever have a chance to get a good, close look at one of these buzzards, because they are so wary, skittish, cautious and intelligent. I mean think about it – you’ve seen dead deer, dogs, cats, coons, possums, snakes, turtles, blackbirds and other redneck delicacies lying in the road, but when have you ever seen a dead buzzard on the road? I would say never! They’re too smart. They’re kind of sweet, too.

I went to Dollywood a couple of years ago, and a guy had one tethered to his wrist. He would play with it, scratch its head and generally love around on it. It was quite touching. He told us that if we would try to love around on it, the sweet thang would most likely bite our fingers off. Hmmph. I didn’t believe him, but I didn’t want to actually prove him wrong either. Call me chicken if you want to, but the way these birds rip and tear meat out of road kill…

Speaking of road kill, I’ve always poked a little good natured fun at people who eat road kill, but I always forget this one little incident that happened way back when. You see, my stepfather is a Cajun and has been known to stop and pick up what he had just hit, since its freshness was thusly guaranteed. This, however, was unbeknownst to me at the time he married my mom.

Anyway, one evening I arrived home late from a school field trip to find the house deserted and a pot of deliciously smelling pork (I presumed) stew on the stove. Being a growing, strapping, young lad, I consumed half the pot with gusto. I went to bed and was awakened later by sounds of laughter and something about “turtle on the road” and “ran over” and "he almost ate it all!"

What happened was this: Mr. “Hit-it-nab-it-throw-it-in-a-pot” had chased down (or at the very least just ran over) a turtle, turned around, picked it up, went home, cleaned it and threw it in a pot without leaving me a warning note! Like I was some redneck kid that you could just shovel road kill at! My proper, English ancestors would turn in their graves and wee their Earl Grey tea! I was bred for better than that!!!

But do you know the worst thing about that road kill stew? It was good. Very good.

American Dipper Part 2

American Dipper Part 2

Just bobbing along on the surface!

A LIFE list addition and one of the most interesting birds that I have had the pleasure to observe! A special thanks to Brad Esau who helped locate this bird today on the Coquitlam River (smal-medium size, clean & fast moving!) I managed to snap off ~ 250 images of this;ittle guy going about his life. A passerine who is most at home around moving water --- they can stand in the current, run along the bottom, swim beneath the surface using their wings for propulsion and then they hop onto the nearest rock and they look like they are not even wet! Absolutely fascinating and very memorable. :-)

A chunky bird of western streams, the American Dipper is North America's only truly aquatic songbird. It catches all of its food underwater in swiftly flowing streams by swimming and walking on the stream bottom.

Description
top
Stocky, medium-sized bird.
Gray all over.
Large head; short neck.
Long legs.
Short tail.
Thin, dark bill.
White eyelids obvious when it blinks.
Constantly bobs body up and down.

Size: 14-20 cm (6-8 in)
Weight: 43-67 g (1.52-2.37 ounces)

The American Woman's Home

The American Woman's Home, originally published in 1869, was one of the late nineteenth century's most important handbooks of domestic advice. The result of a collaboration by two of the era's most important writers, this book represents their attempt to direct women's acquisition and use of a dizzying variety of new household consumer goods available in the post-Civil War economic boom. It updates Catharine Beecher's influential Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841) and incorporates domestic writings by Harriet Beecher Stowe first published in The Atlantic in the 1860s. Today, the book can be likened to an anthology of household hints, with articles on cooking, decorating, housekeeping, child-rearing, hygiene, gardening, etiquette, and home amusements. The American Woman's Home, almost a bible on domestic topics for Victorian women, illuminates women's roles a century and a half ago and can be used for comparison with modern theories on the role of women in the home and in society. Illustrated with the original engravings, this completely new edition offers a lively introduction by Nicole Tonkovich and notes linking the text to important historical, social, and cultural events of the late nineteenth century. Nicole Tonkovich is associate professor of Literature at the University of California, San Diego and the author of Domesticity with a Difference: The Nonfiction of Sarah Josepha Hale, Catharine Beecher, Fanny Fern, and Margaret Fuller. "A valuable book made conveniently available." -Choice

Sternberg Special Collections Photo

Sternberg Special Collections Photo

Photo of the W.H. Sternberg Mansion in Wichita, KS. Photo appeared in Carter's Monthly Magazine (which did a large 30-page expose on Wichita in the last 1890s.) Since the time of this photo the two-story carriage house in the back was converted to a single family house, but is still standing today and looks much the same (11/30/2009). W.H. Sternberg designed and built this residence at the height of Wichita's greatest economic boom and it was both a personal residence and a showcase home for Wichita's well-to-do. The Mansion includes five woodburning fireplaces, stained glass windows, a walnut staircase, parquet flooring, approximtely 90 -some windows and 6,000 sq. ft, of finished space not including a full basement at 2040 sq. ft. The corbelled chimney flues are highly ornate and all chimneys are completely original and the tallest stands almost 50 ft. off the ground (not including chimney pots). The apex of the house stands at 45 ft. off the ground. It was built in 1886. The residence is lavishly ornamented on the exterior and is frequently admired for the use of multiple porches on each of it's three main elevations. Present owner is open to assistance from interested parties that may provide assistance with converting the residence into a historic house museum (04/08/09).

Sternberg both designed and built several homes for himself and family members (as well as many others) and this was certainly the largest and most ornate of the personal residences he built for himself or family. Sternberg was quite involved in the design of residences he built and was well known in New York and Kansas as being a "trend-setter" when it came to innovative and stylish designs. In southern New York State, for example, he's credited with having introduced the mansard-style roof after attending the Paris Word's Fair in 1855. Certain design elements frequently re-appear throughout Sternberg homes helping to make their identification somewhat easier. Other Sternberg buildings are known to exist in New York and Missouri. It's suspected that there may be Sternberg homes / buildings in Illinois, Indiana and/or Connecticut and possibly other states. Sternberg is known to have bid and worked on projects throughout the state of New York and the central plains region.

In Wichita's early days, Waco Avenue was the "Elite Street" and grand mansions (such as Sternberg Mansion, Ross Mansion & the Smyth Mansion) dotted Wichita's most exclusive avenue. A Wichita Evening Eagle newspaper article on August 3, 1933 comments,

“in the early ‘70s (1870s)…Waco avenue was ‘the elite’ street. Waco avenue in the very early day was considered to be the best residential street and many believed that when the city grew large it would be the choice residence district of the city.”

Sternberg Mansion is the last surviving mansion of all these grand Waco Avenue residences from Wichita's economic boom years of the 1870s-1880s. An Eagle-Beacon newspaper article from November 16, 1976 states,

“The house, built in 1886 by William H. Sternberg, one of Wichita’s foremost builders during the city’s early boom days, is the only remaining Queen Anne style mansion of this size in the city. It is seen as a magnificent example of Victorian architecture, with most of the original detailing and gingerbread on the exterior, a large walnut staircase, wood paneling, and five fireplaces.”

Another Wichita Eagle-Beacon newspaper article April 10, 1977 stated about the mansion,

“The Sternberg Mansion…is unusual in that its eclectic style incorporates all the elements Sternberg could fabricate…Sternberg used his own home as a sort of ‘model home,’ a tangible example of his expertise for prospective customers… it is the only remaining Queen Anne-style mansion of its size in the city and it is a magnificent example of architecture…The use of exterior wood in patterns is most unusual as are the variations of the use of colored and plain glass. The leaded and stained glass windows on the landing of the very ornate staircase are most unusual in that they are of a geometric pattern not common until the 1920s.” (these windows were stolen from the Mansion in the 1970s, but were recovered by police - unharmed - and subsequently re-installed in the Mansion).

Sternberg Mansion has appeared in books, magazines, post cards and about three dozen newspaper articles beginning in September, 1886 in the Wichita Beacon which noted:

“Mr. Sternberg is building for his own use a fine residence on the corner of 10th and Waco Streets. Judging by the foundation it will be one of the largest and finest in the city.”

An article from November 2, 1969 in the Eagle-Beacon newspaper noted the quality of the Sternberg Mansion,

“It was built to last with joists of 2 by 8-inch timbers, and wood-work of pine so hard it will not take a regular nail and one interior wall that is 15 inches thick.”

In 1888, Chapman Brothers published the "Portrait

Stupidest thing I've ever done since RVing (well...one of them)

Stupidest thing I've ever done since RVing (well...one of them)

In our Cardinal 34TS Fifth wheel there isn't a good place to hang your bath towel after showering so I decided that I needed to install a towel bar somewhere. However there wasn't a good place large enough except on the shower door itself. Knowing that it wasn't feasible to try and drill holes through tempered safety glass I abandoned the idea. But upon discussing my predicament with my fellow RV snowbird friends over morning coffee they were all of the opinion that the "glass" was not glass at all but hardened acrylic as glass was surely too heavy to install in an RV. So upon further examination (finger tapping etc.) I became convinced that they were indeed right. I then ordered, on line, a $55 shower door towel bar which was delivered by our friendly UPS man yesterday afternoon.
I happily got my drill, bits, & tool box from the RV basement an headed up to the bedroom. As I began to drill a mounting hole in the proper position, I thought to myself, "Wow! This hardened acrylic is really hard". After about a minute or so of steady drilling I decided that I should give the drill a rest. Now here's where the story gets real nasty! As soon as I released pressure on the drill and was drawing it back from the door...POW...instant crazing of the entire door into tiny glass pieces. Obviously, it was indeed tempered glass. I've since checked on the internet and these doors cost in the neighborhood of 6 to 8 hundred dollars. Ouch!!
And needless to say, I'm not too popular with my wife right now. She had to clean up all the glass...as I was too busy trying to drink up all of my scotch..so now I'm also out of scotch and I have a headache. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to get up in the morning!
On the plus side, the boys at coffee this morning got a good laugh!

For reference, it smells like Pine-Sol.

Desperate for answers last night at 3 am with a sore throat, I discovered that cayenne is the #1 remedy for a sore throat. Of course we didn't have any and I left a note for my mom to get some in the morning. She did. Well, sort of. She got a big ass bottle of ground red pepper because it was cheaper than the smaller bottle of cayenne. Ugh. Well, either way it worked. I gargled with warm water and a few shakes of the ground red pepper then went back to bed. When I woke up, the scratchiness that had plagued me since the day before was gone. Weird!
I had some chicken and rice soup, sprinkled with red ground pepper.
When I got McDonald's later on after working on my house (I'm at the point where it's SO CLOSE but SO FAR) I came home to sprinkle the ground red pepper on my burger, in the sweet & sour sauce, and even in my lemonade. It was good. Strangely good. It really has no flavor, just heat and it's interesting to pair it with different things. I'm itching to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies with pepper added. I know it can be good, but I was never brave enough to try it.

And so now I gargled again, this time adding lemon juice to the hot water and you can see the ground red pepper floating. It smelled like floor cleaner, but it didn't taste very bad.

I'm also taking echinacea.
I despise GP's, so no way I would go to a doctor for a simple sore throat. Plus I'm not sure what my insurance would cover. I don't even have an insurance card.

Remedy for Farm Women that Can

Remedy for Farm Women that Can

For Burns

excerpt from _Homeopathic Medicine at Home_ :

In any burn there is an element of shock. Give ARNICA immediately. One dose is usually enough; if shock persists, repeat as needed. After shock has passed, the burned person may feel more pain. If so, give CANTHARIS every fifteen minutes. Continue until improvement is noted. Repeat CANTHARIS if pain returns.

Women who live in farm country do a lot of canning, and inevitably some suffer burns or scalds. This happened to a patient, Martha, who received a steam scald on her right forearm that covered the entire arm from palm to elbow. When she called me, I told her to take CATHARIS, two tablets every fifteen minutes for a few doses, then as pain subsided, increase intervals between doses. I also recommended that she bathe her forearm with HYPERICUM lotion ad then cover the burned area with a clean cloth moistened with the same lotion. When she came to the office the next morning, she said that the pain had stopped after the second dose of CATHARIS, so she took no more. On examination, the arm showed no blisters; there was only pink skin with no breaks. The burned area healed swiftly without a scar.
